When Do I Perform BSGI?
The BSGI/MBI Diagnostic Process
You may be unsure of when Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI) should be utilized in your screening and diagnostic process. You will see in the BSGI Decision Tree that BSGI is the logical next step after a diagnostic mammogram.
Additional Indications for BSGI:
- Assists in differentiation of scar tissue from cancer reoccurrence in patients with a previous cancer diagnosis.
- Screening high-risk patients. Particularly useful for patients with elevated risk factors that fail to meet the American Cancer Society guidelines for MRI screening.
- Screening in patients with factors limiting the utility of mammography such as: dense breasts, implants or injections for augmentation.
- Patients with indeterminate findings with low probability of malignancy needing additional reassurance. For example, patients with BIRADS III findings requiring short term follow up.
- BSGI (and PEM) are available for patients with renal insufficiency, ferromagnetic implants, and acute claustrophobia, however BSGI is also available to patients with blood glucose complications where as PEM studies require blood glucose to be within normal limits.
